Introduction to Narrative Therapy (1 day)

In this one day workshop, you will develop a rich understanding of this respectful and collaborative approach to healing both individually and community-wide. You’ll learn about the narrative worldview and social justice orientation, and how narrative therapy skills are put into practice. After attending this workshop, you should have an accurate picture of what narrative therapy entails and whether it is a good fit for you. We are offering this class at institutes, agencies and training centers such as The Institute of Contemporary Psychotherapy, NASW-NYC, and Rising Ground.

We will review in this class the key beliefs and principles of narrative therapy, including:

  1. People are not defined by their problems: In narrative therapy, people are viewed as separate from their problems, and are not defined by them. Instead, the focus is on exploring how problems have come to be a part of a person's story, and how they can be addressed and re-framed in a way that allows for new possibilities and perspectives.

  2. Everyone has unique knowledge and expertise: Narrative therapy emphasizes the importance of listening to and valuing the unique knowledge and expertise of each individual. The therapist acts as a collaborator, working with the client to explore and create new narratives that reflect their experiences and perspectives.

  3. The importance of context: Narrative therapy recognizes that people's stories and experiences are shaped by the broader social and cultural contexts in which they live. Understanding these contexts is essential to creating new, more empowering narratives.

  4. The power of language: Narrative therapy places a strong emphasis on the power of language to shape our realities. By exploring and reframing the stories we tell ourselves, we can create new meanings and possibilities for our lives.

Overall, narrative therapy is one that emphasizes collaboration, empowerment, and the creation of new, more hopeful narratives that allow individuals to move beyond their problems and limitations.

Peer to Peer Supervision

Case discussions in the context of narrative therapy. Groups are limited to six clinicians. Rather than top-down, our approach to supervision in this instance is a more collaborative one of illuminating the path with curiosity, lighting a way forward that aligns with your own values, ethics and preferred ways of being in this work and in the world. There is no one right way, but there is an inquiry about choosing how to “do” ethics and practice within both an individual and narrative therapy world view.
